
Jorge Gato
Jorge Gato, PhD, is a psychologist and an invited assistant professor at the Faculty of Education Sciences at the University of Porto, Portugal. He is also a researcher at the University of Porto's Centre for Psychology. Throughout his career, he has specialised in a branch of psychology that explores the lives and experiences of LGBTQIA+ people. Although LGBTQ+ psychology is concerned with sexuality, its applications are wide-ranging, examining many different aspects including prejudice and discrimination, coming out and identity development, relationships, parenting and families, ageing and old age, and affirmative psychological interventions. He has written two books: the first about LGBTQIA+ parented families, and the second about affirmative psychological interventions. He has published over 60 articles in WoS- and Scopus-indexed journals, and has participated in several funded research projects. He engages with social change through his active presence in the media, his voluntary work with NGOs and his collaboration with government agencies. He was consulted as an expert by the Portuguese parliament regarding the approval of same-sex adoption in Portugal.
