Boris Kudlička

Boris Kudlička

Director of the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera. A set designer, architect and curator, he has played a central role in the world of opera over the past two decades. He studied set design at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava and at the Minerva Art Academy in Groningen. He collaborates regularly with directors including Mariusz Treliński, Keith Warner and Amon Miyamoto, and has created opera productions at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London, New National Theatre Tokyo or State Opera in Vienna.

Kudlička's work extends beyond the theatre into the film industry. He has also been responsible for the design of numerous exhibitions, including the Polish pavilions at Expo 2000 in Hanover and Expo 2010 in Shanghai, for which he was awarded a silver medal. He is the recipient of many awards, including a gold medal at the Prague Quadrennial in 2007, 2011.

Between 2011 and 2014 he taught set design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where in 2012 he received a doctoral degree in fine arts. He also received the Minister of Culture of the Slovak Republic Prize for 2022 for his longstanding and significant contributions to international theatrical and opera scenography.

In 2018 he founded his architectural practice, Boris Kudlička with Partners, specialising in high end interior design for commercial and private developments. Among the studio’s most notable projects are the Raffles Europejski Warsaw hotel, family offices in Zurich, private projects in Doha, and many other residential and commercial developments.

In 2025, he was awarded the Gold Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis.
