Matthew Hornsey

Professor Matthew Hornsey has published more than 200 scientific articles, primarily on intergroup communication, sustainability, and climate change. His recent research focuses on understanding — and reducing — people’s motivation to reject scientific consensus, including the psychology of inaction in the face of the climate crisis. Throughout his career, he has developed models aimed at understanding the logic behind seemingly “irrational” behavior and has used them to support attitude and behavior change.

Currently, Prof. Hornsey leads the Net Zero Observatory at The University of Queensland — an interdisciplinary group of researchers and practitioners designing strategies to accelerate industry action and strengthen public support for rapid decarbonization.
